Leisure Buddy

The Town of Aurora welcomes and encourages all children with exceptionalities to participate in any of our recreation programs. We make every effort to ensure that each child is able to participate at a level suitable to their abilities, support needs, program choice and facility access. To facilitate that participation, the Town created the Leisure Buddy program, which pairs an enthusiastic and compassionate volunteer with each child.

After attending a mandatory training, we match volunteers with children in any of the Town's seasonal or summer programs. The community programmer will often meet with the volunteer prior to the program to make sure they understand the strengths and needs of the participant they will be working with.

Leisure Buddies work one-on-one with their participant for the duration of the program. They can assist with or facilitate the following:

  • Interacting with program staff and participants
  • Communicating or demonstrating instructions
  • Keeping participants focused on tasks
  • Encouraging positive interactions and participation
  • Snack and meal breaks
  • Give extra time to complete tasks

Matched participants are typically high functioning. Leisure Buddies are always supervised by program staff and are never left on their own with participants.

Who can be a Leisure Buddy?

Volunteers for the Leisure Buddy program can be anyone over the age of 14 with a desire to assist others. We typically look for enthusiastic, patient individuals who enjoy working with children and have time to volunteer in our seasonal and summer programs.

If you are interested in becoming a Leisure Buddy please contact 905-727-3123 ext. 3121.
