On June 28, 2022 Council passed By-law No. 6426-22 to regulate and license Short-Term Rentals in the Town of Aurora.
The Short-Term Rental licensing program was initiated by the Town of Aurora at the request of Council to address community concerns and to ensure all Short-Term Rentals (STR’s) operate safely in accordance with the Short-Term Rental By-law.
Residents and property owners who wish to rent their property for a period of 28 days or less are required to obtain a licence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence if I am renting my home for more than 28 consecutive days? |
No, longer than 28 days would be a tenancy agreement. Tenancy Agreements fall under the jurisdiction of Residential Tenancies Act. |
Do I need to consent to disclosing personal information to get a licence? |
Yes, the Town is using a third-party administrator for the short-term rental licensing program who requires access to all submitted materials. Applicants must consent to the disclosure of information to have their application processed and cannot opt-out of this requirement. |
How can I make a complaint about a Short-Term Rental near me? |
Host compliance will receive all complaints through their website or the 24 hour call centre at (365) 544-3496 that they will be operating on the Town’s behalf. Staff will access to any details submitted and will follow-up accordingly. |
How do I know if the Short-Term Rental that I am staying at is licensed? |
Short Term Rentals are required to display a decal containing their license information in a conspicuous place on the property. |
What portion of my home can operate as a Short-Term Rental? |
If you are issued a Short-Term Rental Licence, you are allowed to rent the entire home with/or up to three bedrooms. Off-street parking space must be provided for each bedroom identified as being used for the purposed of STR. |
Do I need to make renovations to my home to operate a short-term rental? |
To maintain a level of safety for you and your guests, the Province of Ontario, through the Building Code, establishes minimum construction standards for your dwelling unit. In general, existing homes that are compliant with the Building Code and Zoning By-law may not require renovations or additional construction. As well, all bedrooms are required to either be built as part of the original construction or lawfully constructed under the authorization of a building permit. |
Are there any additional options for waste collection if I have a short-term rental licence? |
No, you are still required to meet the conditions of the current Town of Aurora’s waste collection schedule (i.e., 3 bag limit and day of collection. For more information on this please visit out Waste and Recycling page. |
What is the maximum number of guests I can rent to? |
The maximum number of guests at any one time is six people. |
I am selling my property, what do I do? |
