Election Signs

Candidates will complete and submit the Election Sign Guide and Registration Form along with the $203.00 Election Sign Registration fee, in person at Town Hall, 100 John West Way.

Election signs shall not be erected prior to the 28th day before Election Day. Signs can be placed as of 12:01 a.m. on Monday September 28, 2026.

Election signs must be removed within seventy-two (72) hours following the closing of polls on Election Day. Signs must be removed by Thursday October 29, 2026

Mayoral/School Board Trustee Candidates and Registered Third-Party Advertisers:

• May place signs at all the intersections listed in Schedule C of By-law No. 5840-16, as amended. Also see York Region's election sign guidelines.
• The maximum number of election signs allowed is two (2) per campaign at any intersection. Some intersections include more than one cross street or have different street names meeting at the same location. These are still considered one intersection. Candidates, Mayoral candidates, School Board Trustee candidates, and Third Party Advertisers may not place additional signs on separate corners or street approaches to exceed the two-sign limit.

Ward Councillor Candidates:

• Can only erect, display signs within the boundaries of the ward for which they have filed nomination papers and which is listed on this application. The intersections listed in Schedule C are organized by Ward. The placement of election signs in any other ward is prohibited. Please refer to Schedule C of By-law No. 5840-16, as amended.
• A maximum of one (1) election sign, per candidate, is allowed on any one (1) private lot or premises.
• At any one time, a maximum of two (2) elections signs on each intersection listed in the Schedule “C” of this by-law, with no more than one (1) election sign per each corner of an intersection.
• Election signs are not allowed on Town owned lands except that each candidate is allowed to erect a maximum of two (2) Election Signs on each intersection listed in the attached Schedule C, of the Sign Bylaw Number 5840-16, as amended, with no more than one (1) Election Sign per each corner of an intersection.
• Election signs shall not obstruct pedestrian and vehicle sight lines.
• Election signs and vehicle election signs are not allowed on property designated as a Voting Location, on Town-owned or Town-operated property, or within 30 metres of those properties.

• Election signs shall not exceed 1.22 metres (4 feet) in height or width. Height is measured from ground level to the top of the sign. Vehicle election signs are exempt from the height restriction.
• Election Signs shall not be digital or illuminated.
• Election signs shall not display the Town’s logo, crest, or seal in whole or in part.
• Election signs shall not obstruct pedestrian and vehicle sight lines.
• No person shall erect or maintain election signs that are in contravention of the Canada Elections Act S.C. 2000, c. 9, Election Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. E.6, the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, S.O. 1996, c. 32, Sched. or any other relevant legislation.
• Any election sign found to be in violation of Sign Bylaw Number 5840-16 as amended is subject to seizure by the Town and any such seized signs shall be stored for a redemption period of 30 days following the election.
  • A candidate, registered third-party advertiser or any person acting on the behalf of a candidate or registered third party advertiser, may retrieve a sign stored by the Town but the Town may destroy or otherwise dispose of any election sign that has not been retrieved following the aforementioned redemption period (30 days) period without notice or compensation to any person.

• A landlord, person, condominium corporation or agent may set reasonable conditions relating to the size or type of signs and may prohibit the display of signs in common areas of the building, but no landlord, condominium corporation or any of its agents may prohibit the owner or tenant of a unit from displaying signs in relation to an election on the premises of their unit.
• Removing, damaging or vandalizing election signs is a criminal offence. People found committing such offences can face charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. 
• If an election sign is posted on private property, any person entering onto private property to attempt to commit an illegal act in relation to election signs may be guilty of trespassing and could be charged under the Trespass to Property Act.

• Before placing a sign on private property permission must be obtained by the property owner.
• Only one (1) sign is permitted per (1) one private lot.
• Private property owners may remove signs that were placed without permission and dispose of them without contacting the Town of Aurora or candidate.  
• Private property owners may contact the Town of Aurora By-law Services to request the removal of a sign that has been placed on their property without permission. The sign will be removed and stored for the applicable retention period.
• Private property owners may also contact the candidate to have a sign removed that was place without permission.

Election signs located on Regional Roads and at regional intersections are subject to additional restrictions.

Please note that York Region’s Sign By-law was recently updated on January 1, 2026, and an additional permit/application from York Region is required for election signs placed on Regional Roads and Intersections.
