Community Reflection Space Concept Plan
Aurora Town Council has approved the design of the Community Reflection Space, a dedicated gathering place for residents to honour and reflect in times of tragedy. Originally proposed by the Indigenous Relations Committee as a place for Truth and Reconciliation, the project evolved to support reflection for all tragic events. Council approved $250,000 in the 2024 Budget for the initiative. To maximize efficiency and funding, the Reflection Space will be designed and built alongside the rehabilitation of the South Town Hall Parking Lot scheduled to begin later this year.
Victoria Hall Refurbishment Funding Increase
Aurora Town Council approved an increase to the budget for the Victoria Hall Refurbishment capital project bringing the total to $2,182,000. Following completion of the concept design, it was determined that the original $500,000 budget was insufficient due to updated project requirements and unforeseen conditions that rendered earlier estimates and feasibility studies outdated. The additional funding will enable the Town to refurbish Victoria Hall into a suitable space for public or tenant use.
Third Party Consultant Contractual Release
Aurora Town Council approved a framework to ensure that all future reports, studies and analyses commissioned from third-party consultants are made publicly available. While many records are already disclosed under the Town’s Routine Disclosure Policy and standard consultant contracts permit release of deliverables, staff will now ensure all future agreements clearly state that any consultant-produced materials may be released to the public.
Motion to Reduce Commercial Stormwater Charges for St. Andrews Shopping Centre
A motion put forward by Councillor Ron Weese and supported by Council directs staff to review the commercial stormwater charges applied to tenants of the St. Andrews Shopping Centre and explore options to reduce or eliminate these fees, including alternative billing models, exemptions, rebates or cost-sharing arrangements. The review will assess the financial, operational and legal implications of any changes, including impacts on the Town’s stormwater rate-supported budget, and consider whether similar measures should apply to other comparable commercial properties in Aurora. Staff will report back with recommendations, timelines and any required policy or by-law amendments for Council’s consideration.
