Description:

Central York Fire Services (CYFS) responded to a commercial alarm activation. The first arriving CYFS unit confirmed a working structure fire. The fire was confirmed to be contained to an interior dumpster in a unit under renovation. The sprinkler system was activated. Command adopted an offensive strategy. Smoke migration into other units was confirmed and ventilation was initiated. No fire extension into the other units. Crews remained on scene for overhaul of the dumpster and complete ventilation.

Cause of incident: Interior dumpster that was protected by a sprinkler system.

Casualties / Injuries: No injuries.

Community Impact: Earl Stewart Drive was closed in the area of Pederson Drive and McMaster Avenue but has since reopened.

Current Status: CYFS has fully extinguished the fire.

Resources Used: CYFS responded with five trucks, 19 fire fighters and a chief officer. CYFS worked in collaboration with York Regional Police and York Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Fire Safety Tips: When a fire occurs, the top priority is to get outside. If possible, when you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
