Time of Call: 2:30 p.m.
Ward: 6
Address / location of incident: Chouinard Way, Aurora

Description: Central York Fire Services (CYFS) responded to a reported stovetop fire. The first arriving unit reported flames visible from the rangehood vent. They made entry and found a fire that extended from the stove top to the upper cabinets. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the fire damage was limited to the kitchen. All residents exited safely. They will be temporarily displaced and have alternative accommodations.

Cause of incident: The fire started with cooking on the stove.

Casualties / Injuries: No injuries.

Community Impact: Chouinard Way was closed between Bolsby Court and Hancock Street.

Current Status: CYFS has fully extinguished the fire.

Resources Used: CYFS responded with four trucks, 16 firefighters and a Chief Officer. CYFS worked in collaboration with York Regional Police, York Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and local utility services.

Fire Safety Tips: Did you know? Cooking is the number one cause of fires in Ontario, causing a third of fire related injuries. In the event of an emergency, working smoke alarms and a home escape plan can save lives. Residential fires burn quickly, and normal escape routes can be compromised in an emergency. Remember to plan and practice your escape routes (two per room) and designate a safe meeting spot outside of your home. In the moment, focus on getting yourself, and others, out of the home and then call 9-1-1 from your meeting place. For information on fire prevention and fire safety, visit cyfs.ca
