Dust Mitigation

Dust Mitigation During Outdoor Stone & Masonry Work

Protecting Your Health, Your Neighbours, and Our Community

Outdoor work such as stone cutting, masonry, concrete sawing, and hardscaping can create fine dust particles that travel far beyond the worksite. These particles — many of them too small to see — can irritate the lungs and impact long-term respiratory health. Reducing dust helps protect your family, your workers, and your neighbours.

Although the Town of Aurora does not have a dust bylaw, we encourage all residents and contractors to follow best practices that promote safety and good neighbour relations.

Why Dust Matters

  • Dust from stone, brick, and concrete can contain fine particles that remain airborne for long periods.
  • These particles can irritate breathing and aggravate conditions such as asthma.
  • Dust travels easily through open windows and property lines.

Simple Ways to Reduce Dust

The following practices are recommended for anyone completing outdoor stone or masonry work:

  1. Use a Wet Saw
Cutting stone or concrete with water dramatically reduces airborne dust.
  2. Clean Work Areas Daily
Sweep and rinse sidewalks, driveways, and paved areas at the end of each workday to prevent dust buildup.
  3. Install Dust Barriers
Use fence filters, mesh coverings, or temporary barriers to help trap dust and prevent it from drifting into neighbouring yards.
  4. Notify Neighbours
If work will be noisy or dusty, let neighbours know in advance so they can close windows or plan accordingly.
  5. Choose Responsible Contractors
Ask contractors about their dust‑mitigation methods before hiring them. Those using wet cutting and daily cleanup practices help contribute to a healthier community.

Be a Good Neighbour

Construction can be disruptive. Open communication and a few preventative measures can significantly reduce the impact on the surrounding area. Aurora residents value clean air, safe neighbourhoods, and thoughtful community behaviour. Thank you for doing your part.
