On May 20, the Government of Ontario announced a three-step reopening plan as well as plans to reopen some outdoor amenities. In response, the Town of Aurora is reopening a number of outdoor amenities, effective May 22.

As of May 22, outdoor recreational amenities such as golf courses, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, soccer, baseball and other sports fields and skate parks will be allowed to reopen. Outdoor limits for social gatherings and organized public events will be expanded to allow these amenities to be used by up to five people. No outdoor sports or recreational classes are permitted.

Under the new reopening plan the following municipal services will reopen:

  • All outdoor recreational amenities will open, including but not limited to baseball diamonds, sports fields, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, BMX and skate parks, all patrons must maintain physical distancing. Team sports are not permitted to practice or play games.
  • Portions of parks and recreational areas containing outdoor fitness equipment will reopen
  • Playgrounds will remain open, all patrons must maintain physical distancing
  • Trails and park benches are open, all patrons must maintain physical distancing
  • The off-leash dog park will remain open, all patrons must maintain physical distancing
  • Park washrooms will be open.

All outdoor picnic sites, picnic tables, gazebos, and shelters are closed.

“With yesterday’s announcement from the Province, I am pleased to hear that outdoor activities will be reopening as of Saturday, May 22. I, along with other Mayors across the province advocated for this and I am in support of reopening our economy and outdoor facilities while staying safe. This is the first step to reopening safely and returning to a more normal everyday life,” says Mayor Tom Mrakas.
