Some of the community’s top young performers were recently honoured as ‘School Athletes of the Year.’ This Sport Aurora program, which recognizes their exceptional achievements and contributions to athletics and sport within the Town of Aurora, is now in its fourth year.

Students are nominated by their elementary and high schools in both the York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board. They are role models who inspire others to participate in, and benefit from, healthy sport.

Unlike 2019, where athletes received their awards at Aurora Town Hall, current COVID-19 protocols do not allow for a group ceremony. Student athletes were presented with their Certificates of Excellence – socially distanced – at their homes by members of Sport Aurora’s Sport Celebration and Recognition Committee.

At this time, 12 athletes from four secondary schools were congratulated for their accomplishments.

  • Cardinal Carter Catholic High School: Jidechukwu Otoh, Tobechukwu Otoh, Julia Micic, and Katie Kimmens
  • Aurora High School: Jack Sutherland, Hailey Appleby, and Sidney Gardiner
  • St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School: Sean Marseille, Matthew Turco, and Julia Cuccia
  • Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School: Ibrahim Rahal, and Nicole Rubinstein

Elementary student athletes will be announced in the fall.

“Even during this challenging year, Sport Aurora wanted to acknowledge the spirit of excellence driven by our community school athletes,” said Sport Aurora Executive Director Laurie Mueller. “They deserve some good news, and Sport Aurora wanted to continue this tradition of celebration. Congratulations on your achievements!”
