Central York Fire Services Incident Report
Incident Type: Structure Fire
Date: January 1, 2022
Time of Call: 2:48 p.m.
Address / location of incident: Metcalfe Street, Aurora
Description:

Central York Fire Services (CYFS) was dispatched to fire in a detached garage on Metcalfe Street.

CYFS crews from stations 4-1, 4-2 and 4-4 responded and upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke from the first and second floors of the building.

Seventeen firefighters responded to the initial report of black smoke and flames coming from inside the home. Hoarding conditions hampered firefighting operations and resulted in defensive operations until the fire could be brought under control and the building safety entered.

Enbridge Gas and Alectra Utilities responded to the scene to isolate the natural gas and hydro to the property.

CYFS worked in collaboration with York Regional Police and York Region Paramedics Services to conduct patient assessments and rehab for firefighters.

CYFS had 5 trucks, 22 firefighters, one investigator, one command vehicle and one Chief Officer on scene.

East Gwillimbury and Richmond Hill were called in under the Mutual Aid Agreement for station coverage. All units are now back at their respective stations.

Cause of incident: The cause and origin of the fire appear to have been a wood stove on the main floor of the garage.
Casualties / Injuries: No injuries to report.
Community Impact: None.
