Town extends condolences after passing of former-Deputy Mayor John Abel


It is with deep sadness that the Town of Aurora shares news of the passing of former-Deputy Mayor John Abel. John served as a member of Council for eight years from 2010 to 2018.He fell critically ill on Sunday, December 2 and passed away in hospital on Thursday, December 6.

“We are all devastated at the tragic news of former-Deputy Mayor John Abel’s passing. This is a very difficult time for everyone as we remember our time with John. 
John was loved by so many in our community,” says Town of Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas. “This community has lost a great man who has done so much for Aurora over the years. On behalf of Council and staff we are all deeply saddened by John's passing and our prayers are with his wife Tracy and the whole Abel family during this difficult time.”

John was recognized on Tuesday, November 27 during the last Council meeting of the 2014 to 2018 term for his service to the community. In addition to serving on Council, John sat on various local boards over the years including the Aurora Seniors’ Association, the Aurora Sport Hall of Fame, Music Aurora and the Aurora Cultural Centre.

Flags at Town Hall will be lowered to half-staff. A condolence book will also be made available at Town Hall for those who would like to contribute a written memory or message of condolence.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
