Aurora Mayor Requests Regional Council Consider Amalgamation of Regional Fire Services
Please see the below motion that Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas has put forward to be considered by York Region Council regarding the creation of a regional fire service:
WHEREAS the consolidation of Aurora and Newmarket fire services into Central York Fire Service has resulted in efficiencies through enhanced levels of fire service and cost efficiencies;
AND WHEREAS a Regional Fire Service may achieve further operating efficiencies, improved department structure, increased service level(s), and cost avoidance opportunities;
BE IT RESOLVED THAT staff work with the nine York Region municipalities, and report back on the potential creation of a Regional Fire Service for Council’s consideration.
The motion is expected to be discussed in February at Regional Council. There are currently eight fire services in York Region, including Central York Fire Services, Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Services, Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire and Emergency Services, Markham Fire and Emergency Services, Georgina Fire and Rescue Services, King Fire and Emergency Services, and East Gwillimbury Emergency and Community Safety Services Department.
