Title

Central York Fire Services to Implement Cost-Recovery Program for Responding to Vehicle Collisions in Aurora and Newmarket

Message

Beginning January 2020, Central York Fire Services will launch a two-year pilot program to recover costs associated with responding to motor vehicle collisions on municipal roadways in the Towns of Aurora and Newmarket.

Drivers who are deemed at-fault for collisions by York Regional Police will be charged for services provided by Central York Fire Services. Invoices will be sent directly to the insurance company of the at-fault driver and fees are typically paid by the insurer.

Currently, Central York Fire Services is the only fire service in York Region that does not charge a service fee for attending motor vehicle collisions on municipal roadways. Other nearby municipalities that have implemented cost-recovery programs include Barrie, Bradford and Uxbridge, among others.

“This is a very common industry practice and it is about ensuring that we consistently have the resources available to respond to emergencies,” says Central York Fire Services Chief Ian Laing. “The revenue generated from the cost-recovery program will be used to help offset the costs of services provided which range from the extrication of collision victims and on-scene medical assistance to the clean-up of hazardous materials and fluids at scenes.”

Standard rates charged by fire services for responding to collisions on municipal roadways are approximately $480 per hour. Central York Fire Services responds to approximately 500 motor vehicle collisions on municipal roadways per year with approximately 83 per cent of those qualifying for the cost-recovery program pilot.

The Joint Council Committee also approved the hiring of a regular part-time administrative assistant to support the program which will launch in January 2020. The Joint Council Committee is made up of three members each from Aurora and Newmarket Town Councils and oversees the administration of Central York Fire Services.
