Sensory Swim
Going swimming at an indoor or outdoor pool can be an overwhelming sensory experience for individuals with autism, sensory or other learning disabilities. The Town of Aurora is proud to introduce a Sensory Swim geared towards those who have sensory sensitivity and would benefit from swimming in a pool environment with reduced sensory stimulus.
Sensory Swim - Information & Drop-In Schedule |
Intended for swimmers who have sensory sensitivity and would benefit from swimming in a pool environment with reduced sensory stimulus. Sensory Swim times are open to swimmers of all ages and abilities. During this time, there will be no background auditory music or announcements, and reduced number of swimmers per swim. Sensory Swim is only available at the A.F.L.C. Pool.
How can I better support those who have sensory sensitivity issues?
Some swimmers may find the following items beneficial:
- Ear bands or ear buds
- Swim cap
- Swim friendly lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (P.F.D.)
- Swimming goggles
- Nose clips
- Full bathing suit

Use of the Pools During Lane & Leisure Swim Times |
Lane Swim
- For those wishing to utilize the pool for fitness and endurance. Participants are asked to swim lengths with minimal breaks and in the lane appropriate to their speed. Lifeguards reserve the right to ask swimmers to move to a more appropriate lane based on speed to promote traffic flow. Do not stop in the middle of the lane.
Exception: During designated times the S.A.R.C. pool will have an aquafitness lane available for individuals wishing to do stationary exercise.
Leisure Swim
- Fun and enjoyment for all ages.
During Lane and Leisure swim times, parents can teach basic swim skills to their children in the pool (not from the pool deck).
Note: The drop-in swim times are not intended to be used by for profit businesses/individuals to run their paid swim programs. If you wish to use either of the pools to run a lesson for your paid swim programming, you must permit the pool by contacting our Aquatics Coordinators.
- For both the A.F.L.C. and S.A.R.C pool please email Terri Edwards.
