New Pilot Project for Left Turn Restrictions in Aurora

No left turns from Yonge Street onto Wellington Street during peak hours

The Regional Municipality of York, at the request of the Town of Aurora, has implemented temporary left turn restrictions (buses excepted) from Yonge Street onto Wellington Street. The pilot project aims to measure the effect of restrictions on traffic congestion and safety.

The restrictions will be in effect from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The pilot will commence on Monday, April 3 and run until Friday, June 2.

The left turn restrictions pilot project is part of an ongoing effort to look at long-term solutions to traffic congestion. Based on York Region’s 2016 network screening report, the Yonge Street and Wellington Street intersection ranked 20th out of more than 1600 intersections for potential safety improvements.

The Regional Municipality of York pilot will evaluate the pilot before, during and after using traffic volume counts, travel time studies and real-time Bluetooth technology. York Regional Police have been notified of the days and time of the restrictions and have been requested to monitor the intersection for compliance and enforcement.
